Even if you love winter it comes with it's challenges, one of the biggest being able to keep your hands soft and smooth rather than dry and cracked.  This becomes even more challenging if you spend any kind of time outdoors in the winter (like I do), but here are a few tips to help prevent you from having "alligator skin" this winter.

1. Hydrate
In the winter people have a tendency to drink less water than in the summer because it is cold outside, rather than hot.  Make sure you are drinking an adequate amount of water daily, even if you don't feel like it.  The average person should be drinking around 8 cups of water a day.  You can find more stats on the internet about how much water you should be drinking, based on age, gender, activity level, etc.

 2. Avoid
When you are trying to protect your skin in the winter there are a few things you should avoid.  First, avoid exposure and wear gloves when you go outside.  Don't expose your hands to the elements!  I always find it amazing how chapped my hands can get just by going outside on a cold day without gloves.  Save yourself a little trouble and just don't do it.

Second, minimize hand washing.  I know you may be a germ freak, but excessive washing not only cleans your hands, but it rids them of the natural oils that help protect your skin.  You probably don't have to wash your hands as often as you think you do.

Third, avoid products that will dry your skin, like alcohol based hand sanitizers.  If you notice a particular skin product (soap, lotion, cleanser, etc.) drying your skin, stop using it!  If you really love it you can just wait until summer to use it again.  It's not worth the trouble it causes to use it in the winter.

3. Moisturize
Use a good lotion and apply after showering or washing your hands.  You can use it anytime it's needed, but it will be especially effective when used after showering or handwashing because it will lock in moisture and prevent the water from drying out your skin.  You can also use a simple soap with more oils or moisturizers in it, instead of one with a gazillion ingredients.  Two years ago I started washing my hands with my goat milk soap bars instead of liquid hand soap.  This small habit change has significantly helped my skin.  Invest in a soap dish and change your routine - it will be worth it!

4. Repair
Now what if your skin is already really bad this winter?  How can you help repair it?  First, find a pair of gloves.  Next, slather your hands in lotion at night and wear the gloves to bed.  Or better yet, use whipped body butter (contact me for a custom order) or find a balm with lanolin in it.  A few nights of special treatment, in addition to the above steps, will get your hands feeling soft again.

Have you found any favorite methods on protecting your hands during the winter?  I'd love to hear your thoughts below!

Note: I am currently having a winter sale on goat milk lotion.  Jump start your hand protection with savings on products made with quality ingredients.
I love clearance sales.  And I love clean closets.  That is why I am bringing you this great sale!  A couple of years ago I bought a lotion base to use for something.  Customizing it with my own scent and added ingredients, I had the bottle of lotion I needed.  Well, ever since then, the unused portion of the base has just been sitting in my closet (taking up space that I could be using for other supplies and just begging to be used).  Even though I make lotion, I hardly ever use it except during the winter when my hands get chapped.  Right now I have a lot more lotion than I can use!

This unscented lotion is a nice gentle base, and can be customized in any size, scent, or with any special ingredient I have in stock.  Special ingredients include vitamin E, cocoa butter, shea butter, and mango butter.

I  have quite a few essential oils and fragrance oils to choose from: Peppermint, spearmint, bergamot, pink grapefruit, lemon, lime, sweet orange, lemongrass, verbena, rosewood, peru balsam, cedarwood, fir needle, eucalyptus, citronella, tea tree, lavender, ylang ylang, rose petals, coconut, holiday garland, vanilla bean, ginger, cinnamon leaf, nutmeg, clove bud, jasmine, clary sage, frankincense, cucumber melon, creamsicle, and white ginger amber. In addition to all of these fragrances I can also do a combination of oils to make a different scent. Several of these scents have not made it out to my main product line yet.

Three different sizes of bottles are available: 2 oz, 4 oz, and 8 oz.

So how exactly does this clearance sale work?  First, pick what size of bottle you want.

2 oz - $0.75
4 oz - $0.75
8 oz - $1.00

Next decide if you would like any added ingredients.

2 oz bottle - $0.25/ingredient
4 oz bottle - $0.50/ingredient
8 oz bottle - $1.00/ingredient

Finally, pick your fragrance, is desired.
2 oz bottle - $0.10/fragrance
4 oz bottle - $0.20/fragrance
8 oz bottle - $0.35/fragrance

Write down the list of what you would like, and then email me!  I will let you know how much shipping will cost (if applicable), and get it to you as soon as possible!  Sale is good as long as supplies last.

Example: You would like a 4 oz bottle of lotion ($0.75) with shea butter ($0.50), vitamin E ($0.50), and lemon ($0.20) and lime ($0.20) essential oils.  Total cost would be $2.15.
"Take time to smell the roses." ~Proverb
I love roses.  I love their fragrance.  I love gathering them to put in a vase in the kitchen.  I love collecting and drying their petals.  The rose fragrance used in both my goat milk lotion and soap is true to everything I love about roses.  Pure, sweet, and as fragrant as the flower.

A little bit of this lotion goes a long way.  Rich and thick, this moisturizing lotion contains goat milk, shea butter, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, and hazelnut oil to keep your skin soft and smooth.  This lotion is a favorite among my customers, ranking in the top three (the other two favorites are lavender and lemongrass).  I like to keep my lotions fresh, because when it comes to lotion I believe that fresh is always best.  This lotion contains a paraben-free preservative, in addition to vitamin E (a natural preservative) to extend its shelf life, but is not intended to last more than a year.

Rose goat milk lotion is available in three sizes: 2 oz, 4 oz, and 8 oz.  The cost per bottle is $3.50, $5.00, and $8.00, respectively.  A sample sized bottle can be sent on request.  You can view this item here on Etsy.

A new line up of lotion is now available.  In addition to the 8 oz lotion bottle, we now offer lotion in 2 oz and 4 oz sizes.

The newest lotion scents available are "Hot Apple Pie" and "Vanilla Bean."  The "Hot Apple Pie" smells like the real thing - a sweet blend of apples and spice.

"Vanilla Bean" smells good enough to eat, and I recommend not using it when you are hungry.  The scent reminds me of a vanilla frappucino that you might buy at Starbucks.

After trial of the lotion by several people, I have received comments that it is a little sticky.  This is due to the shea butter.  While shea butter is a little sticky, it is very good for moisturizing and healing skin.  After first applying the lotion it may feel a little sticky, but that will only last a couple of minutes.  After that time it will fully absorb into the skin, leaving the skin feeling soft.

Last Saturday I made my first batch of lotion.  It contains moisturizing oils like sweet almond, avocado, and shea butter, and dissolves easily into the skin.  It does not leave a sticky residue, but makes your hands feel nice and soft.  You can read everything on the ingredient list - unlike most lotions you buy from a store.  The hardest thing to read on the label is "phenonip" - that's the preservative.

Why does it need a preservative?  Well, lotion is water based.  When you mix oils and water they will only last so long before going rancid or turning moldy - add milk to the equation and it will spoil even faster (although this lotion does not contain milk).  If the lotion was going to be used up in the next couple of weeks it would not need a preservative.  But since I'm selling it, and there is no telling how long it may sit on someone's shelf, it really needs the preservative to keep it fresh and safe for use.  If someone prefers lotion without a preservative I can make it by special request - they will just have to use it up faster.

My first batch of lotion was rose scented.  I have a nice smelling rose fragrance that I use (the same one that I use in my rose petals soap).  Right now all my bottles are 8 oz. bottles, but I will be looking into getting smaller sizes to bottle the lotion in soon.  Next batch of lotion I plan to add goat's milk.  That should add some nice qualities to it.  What kind of scent would you like to see in a lotion?  Let me know.  I might just have the scent for you =)
