What Christmas is all About

Christmas time, more than any other time of the year, is full of busyness.  Shopping, parties, concerts, plays – all contribute to a hectic schedule.  As you wrap your presents, bake cookies, sign cards, and search for gifts online it is easy to get consumed in all that has to be done.  Sometimes you have so much to get done before December 25 that you worry it’s impossible to accomplish it all.  You may despair over your long list of things and wonder, “What is Christmas all about?”

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

Christmas is about a Savior being born.
It’s about good tidings of joy for all people.
It’s about a world in need receiving hope.
It’s about a God of love sending a means of peace.
It’s about a King leaving His riches and living in humility.
It’s about God becoming a man.

Why would God want to leave the splendors of heaven?  Why would the Creator come down and live with His creation?  Why would Jesus Christ, the sinless God-Man take the punishment for crimes He didn’t commit?  Because we were worth it.  We are so import to Jesus that He would rather die than let us be separated from Him for all eternity because of our sin.  Though He never sinned, He took the penalty for the sins of the entire world – separation from God and death.  He laid down His life that others might have eternal life, demonstrating His great love for us; “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13).

But after dying, Jesus did not stay in the grave.  He conquered death through His resurrection from the dead!  Now He lives in Heaven, awaiting all those who believe in Him.  He gave us the greatest gift of all time, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).  What will we do with God’s gift?
Will we reflect upon it?  Will we share it?  Will we daily let it make a difference in our lives?  Jesus gave His best for us.  It is only reasonable that we give our best for Jesus.

Despite your busyness this year, never forget what Christmas is really all about.  Take time to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas – and don’t get so busy “doing” that you don’t have time to enjoy what truly makes Christmas so special.

Merry Christmas!
